At the International Quilt Market a few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Rana Heredia. She is the author of Simply Strings, a fabulous new book geared towards using up scraps.
I was quite taken with her book because, well, the scraps seem to be never ending around here. So using them up is a concept I can get behind!
I like to keep my scraps in jars, as many of you know. I divide them up by color into 6 different jars. The colors I use the most are in these large jars. I also have 3 smaller jars just like them with yellows and oranges, blacks and greys, and browns.
I like many of the projects in Simply Strings. There are a few that I could see myself making, such as this one (below) called, Organic. I've been itching to do a bit of improve piecing (since I've never really done it before). I think this pattern is perfect for that, yet there is still some order to the overall pattern.
Twinkle Toes is another one of the projects that I've got my eye on. I'm thinking I may have to make this with bright scraps for the stars and low volume scraps (pieced in the same manner) for the background. Wouldn't that be cute?!?
These look really fun. I think the patterns in Simply Strings are a great way to empty out some of my jars - and make room for more scraps! 'Cause you know there will be more - LOL!

I'm terrible at scrap sorting. I have a big bin next to my cutting table that I just throw scraps in. When I'm doing a scrap project I take some time at night and iron and cut into the sizes I need.

ReplyDeleteAll right...let me be the first to say I organize scraps by putting them all in the same container. That is it. But that is still a step I would venture that some others don't even bother with, so I sit proudly. Love the pictures of this book...looks like a lot of inspiration. Thanks for the chance to win.

ReplyDeleteI have my scraps stored in see through containers that I purchased from Walmart. I try to cut my leftover pieces from my projects as I go.I have cut them into squares from 1 1/2 inches to 3 1/2 inches and sorted them according to size. I also have strips of various sizes. Odd shaped smaller pieces are placed into another container for making crumble blocks. This system seems to work out very well for me.
I'm not organized when it comes to the scraps. I keep them in a big bin. It's getting jam packed. Time to make something?

ReplyDeleteI store my smaller scraps 1" to 2 1/2" in 4 smaller baskets and anything larger gets placed with its color in bigger stack-able baskets. Sometimes I will keep Fabric Lines in their separate baskets till I use them in projects and 'whittle' them down to size :)!
I just LOVE the 'House' quilt in the new book and would make that first!!
I sort my scraps by size then color. I have a bin of larger scraps and smaller bins of scraps sorted by color. I also have a drawer of strings for quick access. Thank you for sharing this book.

ReplyDeletewell, now that I have seen your scraps, I now will just use jars! Okay, this may get lengthy.....I have a draw set with each draw holding the 1.25, up to 2.5 cut strips, I have a suitcase that holds charms and that size cut leftovers, I have another suitcase filled with the stuff that I am toooo lazy to cut up right away or they really don't fit a size but I can't throw it out!! And, you didn't ask, but I would be making that adorable house quilt on the cover just because it is sooooo fun looking!!!!

I cut my scraps into a few sizes. I'm still figuring out which sizes I'll actually use. I do have a whole basket full of strings of various lengths and widths. Still looking for the perfect project to start using those up with.

ReplyDeleteI sort scraps by color also but I use clear plastic shoe boxes that are stackable. It is easier for me to make something with a piece of fabric that's already been chopped up. Let's face it - I have a hard time cutting into new fabric. I'm afraid I'll need it for something else and not have enough!

ReplyDeleteI have a container for l l/2", l l/2" and 3 l/2" scraps and squares, assorted by color. I cut lots of them into 5", 7" and 10" squares too. I'm able to use my scraps up much more easily this way :) That book looks great!

ReplyDeleteI'm very conscientious about my scraps.
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I tend to identify anything fat-quarter sized or smaller as a scrap. I then cut as many 5", 3" and 2.5" squares as possible out of those scraps. Anything odd remaining after, gets cut into strips that are 3/4" to 2" in width.
The squares get sorted into plastic shoe boxes by color. The strips go into a larger plastic container, as I've been working on a large scrappy string project for quite a while.
I cut some of my scraps into 1 1/2" squares and then triangles so I can make a finished 3" nine patch variation. I sort them itno small boxes by light trianlges, dark triangles, light squares, and dark squares. Then I pull out a batch and use them as Leader/Ender (Bonnie Hunter's idea) sewing. The book looks like so much fun.
ReplyDeleteThey all go into one big basket. Sometimes if I am working with a particular fabric line I will keep them together in a plastic Baggie and then throw it in the basket with the other scraps.

ReplyDeleteI have my scraps in a draw but have started pressing to cut to sizes but also use these for applique.So unless have a project in mind they have stayed in draw. Love your jar idea. I must get some large jars. A rainbow display when not in use.

ReplyDeleteI wish I could say I am just as organized as you with my scraps. At the moment, my scraps are kept in a wire basket...lots of "arms and legs" poke through the holes begging to be used and loved again in another project. I am totally intrigued with the photos here, especially the leaves on a vine! I want to do that!

ReplyDeleteI keep scraps in an ice cream pail; what I consider a scrap is something too small to be neatly folded back with the rest of the fabric. When the pail gets full, I cut them up into 2 inch squares. Otherwise, I go to the scrap pail to try to find something that works for a project before unfolding something else. ReplyDeleteI have those inexpensive plastic 3 drawer rolling bins from Walmart or Target. My daughter made me cute labels for each bin that shows the color. They are no attractive, but they serve their purpose. I also like that I can remove the drawers and dig through. Thanks for the giveaway! I love making scrappy quilts.

ReplyDeleteI cut some scraps into squares and triangles to make a modified nine patch ending up to be q 3" finished block. I have separate small containers for light triangles, light squares, dark trinagles, and dark squares. I try to have some nearby so I can be amking a block as I chain sew my other project (Quitsville.com idea). The quilter's last name is Hunter, I think her first name is Bonnie. I hate this when I can't pull out names as quickly as I used to be able to do. Thanks for the great post.

ReplyDeleteEvery so often I sort my scraps by color and put them in my open bins but more often than not I just put them out of site until I need something and them I go hunting. I am organized about lots of things but not this. It's on my to do sometime list. :)

The strips designated for string quilts go in a long box according to their length. I just finished a King string quilt, & I'm working on a Queen size for the guest room. Strips/squares sorted by width- 1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2, 3 inches, & wider. Right now , they're sorted into darks & lights but I foresee that evolving into diff. colors as I progress. ReplyDeleteI cut scraps into squares: 10, 5, 4.5, 4, 3.5, 3, 2.5, and 2 inches. I also cut 2 1/2" strips. These are sorted by color in a large plastic storage bin with drawers. Any longer strips left over go into a plastic bag for an eventual string quilt. Any small rectangles or squares go into a plastic bag for an eventual ticker tape quilt or item.

I cut my scraps into squares and logs. Smallest being 2" and the largest 5" and 2 1/2 x 4 1/2" logs. I love scrappy quilts.

ReplyDeleteMy scraps and strings are only partly organized. I do have bags of strips and small pieces sorted by color. And a box of light colored 2 1/2" strips and a box of dark ones. But I also have the big "I'll sort these later" bin.

ReplyDeleteHi Amber, When I make the scraps, I put them into a smallish shopping bag. Then, when I start running out of space, I take a couple of hours to cut them into squares, rectangles and strips. Then I put them with the other scraps. When I need a one-inch square, I just go to the correct bag and Voila!

My scraps are not so well organized, but I could get behind the glass jar idea for sure - makes a good room decoration as well as sorting method. My scraps are partially sorted by whether they are strips that I could use in a strip Godseye, but otherwise, they are just in a big covered storage bin---YIKES! -Nancy Mayes
ReplyDeleteMy scraps are sorted by size. 2.5 strips are in a basket, 2' strips in a recycled popcorn tin, 1.5 strips in a recycled ice cream bucket and the rest, odd triangles, strips smaller that 1.5 are in a handled bag that sits underneath my ironing board. I need this book, the bag and basket are full, time to make something.

ReplyDeleteI'd like to say my scraps are all beautifully organised but at the moment they're in ziploc bags, sorted by colour. Not very pretty, but it's practical. One day I'll make some fabric baskets for them :)
ReplyDeleteI have a huge bag by my cutting table and the scraps land in there....also orphan blocks from UFOs that will never get a family! :)

ReplyDeleteI have 8 of the plastic shoe box containers and my scraps are sorted by color. It makes my life so easy when I'm hunting small pieces in certain colors! thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteAll my scraps...and they have to be pretty tiny before I call them scraps...get tossed into a basket. When I get enough I press them & fold them by colour, bag them & put them on the free table at the Guild.

ReplyDeleteI love your jars! My scraps are organized by color into plastic shoe boxes. It works for me, but isn't nearly as fun as your jars. ;)

I am new to patchwork and quilting and surprised at the amazing number of scraps that are accumulating...and I now realise the value of every single piece. At present I keep them in transparent plastic bags, more or less sorted by colour but I love your glass jar idea so might just try that and have them on display too.

ReplyDeleteI wish I could say my scraps are organized in some way or another but right now they are just tossed all together. I have several of the large jars that you use maybe this is the impetuous I need toe get organized, thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI cut all my "leftovers" into strips of 1 1/2, 2 & 2 1/2 widths...they hang clipped together with binder clips where I can see them. Don't like them squished together in boxes.
